In a world of constant distractions, it can be difficult to set aside time to take photos of your family. Taking family portraits is a time-honored tradition that guarantees you at least one annual photo of your entire family. Taking a good family photo, however, is no easy feat. Regardless of whether your family has decided to work with a professional photographer, here are some important tips and advice that ensure you come out with a family photo that will stand out from the rest of the crowd.
Location/Lighting
The first thing to consider is the location and lighting. While choosing an interesting background can tell a great story or provide your photo some context, be sure that it isn’t so distracting that it overwhelms the main subjects of your photo – your family members!
Lighting is also very important and can make or break your family photo. Use natural light when possible. For the most flattering lighting, try to schedule your portrait session for the morning or right before dusk.
Attire
Ditch the old fashioned method of dressing your family in matching attire, which could make your photo come across stiff and contrived. The key is to keep everything clean and simple. This means sticking to solid colors of the same intensity and forgoing patterns and shiny textures.
Photography Tips
Definitely experiment with multiple shots. With the prevalence of digital cameras these days, there’s no excuse not to take multiple shots since you can always delete ones that you don’t like. Taking multiple bursts of shots consecutively and quickly can result in photos that are more natural and less posed. Be creative and have fun with your shots by taking them in a variety of different angles!
Shooting at eye level usually has the best results, especially for pictures with children. Eye level shots are the most engaging, and they also require the photographer to get in closer to the family, capturing more details and face expressions.
The Most Important Tip of All…
The most important thing is to have your family photo come across as natural. It may be helpful to take your family photo in a familiar location. Telling stories or jokes during the photo session can also help put everyone at ease. Action shots are also a great way to avoid awkward photos.
